Week 1 | Introduction, getting to know your work, and defining expectations

Discussion about the path to becoming a character designer. (ILM, Blue Sky Studios). How to complete your character design portfolio and 10 Tips. The importance of a story.

Week 2 | Understanding Character Design

Defining shape language across the board. Find the style of character with strong silhouette and shape; learn about brainstorming

Week 3 | Technique exploration

Exploring techniques that will aid personal artistic development. Bring your sketch to life: Understand the basic principle for character designer.

Week 4 | Character Arcs

Keeping your character identifiable through the different arcs of your story.

Week 5 | Technique exploration

Exploring techniques that will aid personal artistic development. Bring your sketch to life: exaggerate & high contrast for your character.

Week 6 | The importance of consistency

Achieving cohesiveness through your artwork, keeping consistency between styles. Talk about a style guide and create characters for your character line up!

Week 7 | Technique exploration

Exploring techniques that will aid personal artistic development. Bring your sketch to life: How to using reference researching and light and shadow

Week 8 | Presenting your characters to the world

How to effectively present characters created in the course as part of one cohesive portfolio. The importance of knowing your audience and how to continue to develop your portfolio after this course.

David DePasquale
Sang Jun Lee

David was born in Jersey City and raised in Manalapan, New Jersey. Growing up infatuated with the arts and music, he spent his childhood splitting his time between drawing what he loved and playing his piano and trumpet.

He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 2010 with a BFA in Illustration. In January 2015, he moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in the animation industry, began as a Prop Designer for Disney Television Animation, and hasn't looked back since.

He is currently a lead character designer at Netflix, on an unannounced project. His other clients have included Disney Television Animation, Dreamworks TV, WB, Titmouse, Nickelodeon, and Bento Box, among others.

He currently lives in Burbank with his boyfriend and their dog, Banjo.

Sang Jun Lee received his BFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University in California. After graduating, he continued to explore his imagination by specializing in creating style of visual look of character, creature design and Illustration for live action film, feature Animation, commercial and game studios. His clients have included Industrial Light & Magic, Lucas Film, Blue Sky Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Electronic Arts. His film credits include Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars Episode III, Men in Black II, Hulk, War of the Worlds, Dr Seuss' “Horton hears a who”, Rio, Epic, Rio 2, The Peanuts Movie, and Blue Sky’s 2017 feature film release, “Ferdinand”.
